See the Wikipedia article at Targa.

TARGA (Truevision Advanced Raster Graphics Adapter) is a file format mainly used by video games and video character generators.

FeaturesEdit

Targa can be used for 24-bit (full color) or 32-bit (full color and alpha channel) RGB images.

Practical useEdit

Though unseen by the user, the Targa format is much less complex than other formats (even BMP), and is not patented (unlike GIF). This makes the format appealing to those who need a format that doesn't require much "overhead" calculation—an example is a texture file used in a 3D engine.

Though transparency and alpha channels serve similar functions, Targa requires that any transparency information be kept in an alpha channel (i.e. its fourth color channel in 32-bit mode).
